One more day while the wind shifts NE and continues to gust to 25. While blustery, these days are sunny, blue sky beautiful.
We made a morning scooter run to Food Lion, where the lady at the checkout recognized us as the sailors in town. We’ve caught snippets of folks talking about us and it seems they know what we’re up to.
Once the groceries were put away, we took a stroll on the boardwalk trail along the Scuppernong. It’s wonderful!
Initially I thought it would feel too short and be over too quickly, but the sheer quantity and variety of turtles, plus irises, snakes, ferns, trees…with so much to observe, our pace slowed to where the turtles easily outran us.
It seems indicative of a good life, to lose an hour watching turtles.
Walking around town, we’ve been catching whiffs of smoked meat coming from Stick Burnin’ BBQ, so today we went there for lunch.
The pulled pork was melt-in-your-mouth tender; fries, slaw, mac-and-cheese, and tea rounded out the meal.
Afterward, we visited the museum in the old theater…
…and then walked across the bridge over the river, to the park on the far shore.
We’ve been having fun tracking the old rail line, which is gone, but is evidenced in the town layout and street names.
From the park, we scootered south on 94 to the Red Wolf Center, where we were looking forward to the 3pm program. When we arrived, the gates were locked. I called and learned that something unforeseen had happened that would keep the Center closed through the weekend. We did get to see another of Matt Willey’s “The Good of the Hive” murals – the first being on the Ape House at the National Zoo in DC.
We scootered home and spent the rest of the afternoon onboard, quietly relaxing.
